Education system in Czech Republic

Školní systém v České republice – často tvoří námět na diskuze při výuce angličtiny, často to též bývá i jedna z otázek u maturity z anglické jazyka. Proto si ukážeme stručný přehled, jak to v České republice vypadá a uvedeme si k tomu i několik užitečných slovíček a frází, které můžete použít.

Pre-school education

• Nursery school – mateřská škola
• Nursery schools may be attended by children from three to six years old.
• Nursery schols are not compulsory, but most childres are attending them.
• Activities in nursery schools are mostly focused on developing social habits through games and interaction with other children.
• Some nursery schools are paid, some are free.

Compulsory education

• Compulsory – povinný
• Compulsory education lasts for 9 years, usually from age of 6.
• The school year begins on 1st September.
• The school year ends on 31st August.
• Lesson duration is 45 minutes.
• Lessons are five days a week.
• Objectives are set by the national techaing authority.
• Regularly meeting with parents are organized by school.

Secondary education

• General secondary school – gymnázium
• Secondary school – střední odborná škola
• Secondary vocational school – střední odborné učiliště
• Attendance is for four years in case of general secondary school and secondary school.
• Attendance is for three years in case of secondary vocational school.

Tertiary education

• There are state and private schools in the Czech Republic.
• Higher education institutions are university and non-university schools.
• Higher prefessional school – vyšší odborná škola (VOŠ)
