This restaurant is more good than that one – slyšíte tu chybu? V češtině stupňujete „dobrý – lepší – nejlepší" a nikdo neřekne „více dobrý". V angličtině je to stejné: good má nepravidelný tvar better, ne more good. Ale u většiny přídavných jmen záleží na délce slova – krátká přidávají koncovku (bigger), dlouhá používají more (more beautiful). A právě tahle hranice dělá českým studentům největší potíže.

1. Tři stupně přídavných jmen

3. Dvouslabičná přídavná jména

U dvouslabičných slov záleží na koncovce – některá berou -er/-est, jiná more/most, a některá obojí.

3.1 Koncovky -y, -ow, -le, -er → vždy -er/-est

Pravidlo pro -y: koncové -y se mění na -ier / -iest

ZákladníKomparativSuperlativPřeklad
beautiful more beautiful the most beautiful krásný
expensive more expensive the most expensive drahý
interesting more interesting the most interesting zajímavý

5. Nepravidelná přídavná jména

ZákladníKomparativSuperlativPřeklad
good better the best dobrý
bad worse the worst špatný
far farther/further the farthest/furthest daleký
little less the least malý (množství)
much/many more the most hodně
old older/elder the oldest/eldest starý
late later/latter the latest/last pozdní

This is better than that. – Tohle je lepší než tamto. He's the best student in the class. – Je nejlepší student ve třídě. This is the worst day ever. – To je nejhorší den vůbec.

5.1 Far – vzdálenost vs přenesený význam

VýznamKomparativSuperlativ
Fyzická vzdálenostfarther the farthest
Přenesený význam (další, další kroky)further the furthest

London is farther than Paris. – Londýn je dál než Paříž. I need further information. – Potřebuji další informace.

BrE: V britské angličtině se further používá pro obojí – fyzickou i abstraktní vzdálenost.

5.2 Old – věk vs rodina

VýznamKomparativSuperlativ
Obecný věkolder the oldest
Sourozenci (formální)elder the eldest

She's older than me. – Je starší než já. My elder brother lives in London. – Můj starší bratr žije v Londýně.

Pozor: Elder se nepoužívá s than ani za slovesem be:

  • ❌ She's elder than me. → ✅ She's older than me.
  • ❌ She is elder. → ✅ She is older.

5.3 Late – čas vs pořadí

VýznamKomparativSuperlativ
Čas (pozdější)later the latest (nejnovější)
Pořadílatter the last (poslední)

The latest news. – Nejnovější zprávy. The last person in line. – Poslední člověk ve frontě.

6. Použití THAN a THE

Komparativ + than:

Superlativ + the:

He's the tallest in the class. – Je nejvyšší ve třídě. This is the most expensive car. – Tohle je nejdražší auto.

BrE vs AmE: Po than můžete použít me/him/her (neformální) nebo I/he/she (formální):

She's taller than me. (neformální, běžné) She's taller than I (am). (formální)

7. AS...AS – stejná úroveň

Stejně: as + přídavné jméno + as

I'm as tall as you. – Jsem stejně vysoký jako ty. This is as expensive as that. – Tohle je stejně drahé jako tamto.

Není stejně: not as + přídavné jméno + as

I'm not as tall as you. – Nejsem tak vysoký jako ty. This restaurant is not as good as that one. – Tahle restaurace není tak dobrá jako tamta.

Pozor: Existuje i tvar not so...as, který je formálnější:

He's not so clever as he thinks. – Není tak chytrý, jak si myslí.

8. LESS a LEAST – opak stupňování

Místo more/most můžeme použít less/least pro vyjádření menší míry:

StupeňMoreLess
Komparativmore interesting less interesting
Superlativthe most interesting the least interesting

This film is less interesting than that one. – Tento film je méně zajímavý. This is the least expensive option. – Toto je nejméně drahá možnost.

Tip: Místo less + přídavné jméno můžete často použít not as...as:

This film is not as interesting as that one. (= less interesting)

9. Double comparatives – čím víc, tím víc

Konstrukce the + komparativ..., the + komparativ vyjadřuje vzájemnou závislost:

The more you study, the more you learn. – Čím víc se učíš, tím víc se naučíš. The bigger the house, the higher the price. – Čím větší dům, tím vyšší cena. The sooner, the better. – Čím dříve, tím lépe. The harder you work, the more you earn. – Čím tvrději pracuješ, tím víc vyděláš.

10. Zdůraznění komparativu

10.1 Silné zdůraznění

10.2 Mírné zdůraznění

10.3 By far + superlativ

He's by far the best. – Je zdaleka nejlepší. This is by far the most expensive car. – Toto je zdaleka nejdražší auto.

11. Užitečné konstrukce se superlativem

11.1 One of the + superlativ + množné číslo

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. – Praha je jedno z nejkrásnějších měst v Evropě.

❌ one of the most beautiful city → ✅ one of the most beautiful cities (vždy množné číslo!)

11.2 Superlativ + ever

This is the best film I've ever seen. – To je nejlepší film, jaký jsem kdy viděl. She's the smartest person I've ever met. – Je nejchytřejší člověk, jakého jsem kdy potkal.

11.3 Comparative + and + comparative

Vyjadřuje postupnou změnu:

It's getting colder and colder. – Je čím dál chladněji. The exam is getting more and more difficult. – Zkouška je čím dál obtížnější. She's becoming more and more confident. – Je čím dál sebevědomější.

12. Typické chyby Čechů

❌ Špatně: more better ✅ Správně: better Proč: Good je nepravidelné – komparativ je better. Kombinace more + nepravidelný tvar je dvojité stupňování.

❌ Špatně: the most cheapest ✅ Správně: the cheapest Proč: Krátké slovo (cheap) → koncovka -est. Nelze kombinovat most + -est.

❌ Špatně: more big ✅ Správně: bigger Proč: Krátké jednoslabičné slovo → koncovka -er, ne more.

❌ Špatně: I'm taller that you. ✅ Správně: I'm taller than you. Proč: U komparativu se používá than (ne that). Čeština má „než" – anglicky than.

❌ Špatně: He's oldest in the class. ✅ Správně: He's the oldest in the class. Proč: Superlativ vyžaduje určitý člen the.

❌ Špatně: one of the most beautiful city ✅ Správně: one of the most beautiful cities Proč: Po one of the + superlativ následuje vždy množné číslo.

13. Přehled pravidel

Typ přídavného jménaKomparativSuperlativ
1 slabika (short)shorterthe shortest
1 slabika na -e (nice)nicerthe nicest
1 slabika, zdvojení (big)biggerthe biggest
2 slabiky na -y (happy)happierthe happiest
2 slabiky na -ow, -le, -ernarrowerthe narrowest
3+ slabiky (beautiful)more beautifulthe most beautiful
Nepravidelná (good, bad)better, worse the best, the worst

14. Shrnutí

  • Krátká slova (1 slabika) → -er / -est (taller, the tallest)
  • Dlouhá slova (3+ slabiky) → more / the most (more beautiful)
  • Dvouslabičná → záleží na koncovce (happy → happier, tired → more tired)
  • Nepravidelná → naučit se zpaměti (good → better → the best)
  • Less / least → opak more / most (less expensive)
  • The more... the more → čím víc, tím víc
  • Komparativ vždy s than, superlativ vždy s the
  • Po one of the + superlativ vždy množné číslo

Tip: Když si nejste jisti u dvouslabičného slova, použijte more/most – nikdy to nebude úplně špatně. A u příslovcí platí stejný princip.
